Okomu Forest Health & Biodiversity Baseline
Understanding forest ecosystems through long-term observation.
This proposed research programme would investigate forest structure, visible fungal diversity and selected environmental indicators across carefully chosen habitats in the Okomu landscape of Edo State, Nigeria.
The initial objective would be to establish a small, scientifically supervised ecological baseline that could support future biodiversity monitoring, conservation research and collaboration with Nigerian scientific institutions.
Proposed research components
01
Forest Structure
Documenting selected vegetation characteristics, tree measurements and canopy conditions to support ecological baseline observations.
02
Fungal Biodiversity
Recording visible macrofungi through field photography, ecological observations and identification supported by qualified scientific collaborators.
03
Environmental Indicators
Observing selected habitat conditions and potentially basic soil characteristics to investigate relationships between forest conditions and biodiversity.
Research approach
The programme is intended to begin with a limited pilot, using methods developed and reviewed with qualified scientific partners.
Potential field sites, sampling methods, permissions, equipment requirements and funding arrangements have not yet been finalised.
This programme is currently at the concept-development stage. No fieldwork has commenced. Its scope and implementation remain subject to scientific review, institutional collaboration, required permissions and funding.
